Getting Your Hot Tub Ready for Spring

We’re finally getting to the end of the Winter and you may well be thinking about unfurling your hot tub and getting it ready for Spring. There’s a bit of work to do, however, if you want to enjoy those hot jets again as the weather gets warmer.

At Aqua Design and Leisure, one of the big maintenance questions we get asked by customers is the best way to get their tub ready for the Spring/Summer and we explain below how a hot tub ‘Spring clean’ is pretty easy to do.

Here is our step by step guide:

1. Drain the Tub

Whether you use your hot tub all year round or prefer to avoid taking a dip in the Winter, Spring is the best time to do a full clean. If your tub is full, then you need to drain it first. If you have emptied over Winter, you still need to give it a thorough clean, including the pipes and filters.

The best way to do this is with a spa system flush which means filling your tub, flushing it through and then filling it again with fresh water. This not only gets rid of any stagnant water that may have collected in the pipes over Winter but flushes out any debris that may have gathered.

2. Inspecting Your Hot Tub

While the tub is empty, it’s a good time to also give your whole system a closer inspection. Look for any signs of leaking and, with metal parts, check if any rust has formed.

Also, pay attention to seals and see if these need to be replaced because they are leaking or look degraded. The other areas to inspect are the filters and whether these need to be cleaned and/or replaced.

3. Clean the Tub

Even if your hot tub has been well covered over the winter, it’s important to give both the inside and outside a good clean. While you’re at it, take a look at the path or route leading to your hot tub and spruce this up, getting rid of any leaves and dirt as well as cutting bushes back.

Once you’ve completed all these steps, your hot tub is essentially ready to refill and start using again. You should ideally use a pre-filter which gets rid of minerals and any sediment in your water as well as making sure the pH level is balanced.

Now is the time to check that things like the pump are still working properly by switching everything on. If there are problems, you may want to replace parts before Spring gets underway.

4. Servicing Your Hot Tub

If you don’t feel like, or are unable to put in the work to get your hot tub ready for Spring, this time of year is the ideal time to book a professional service. You should schedule one of these at least once a year as it helps keep the mechanism in good condition and extends the lifespan of your tub.

A service will inspect all parts, clean the filters, replace faulty parts that are under warranty, test the water, apply a treatment if needed and, hopefully, leave your tub sparkling clean. That means your hot tub is really fit to dip once the weather gets warmer.
